Nature

On Saturday I went for a hike on a trail that overlooks a river and after a long while of hiking I found a great place to sit down. I had intentionally brought my bible. Well, the Bible was on my pda, which was to my mind an interesting intersection of raw nature and refined nature. But as I flipped on Psalms which i have been reading lately I read from Psalm 19 "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork..." I can not explain the peace that came over me after sitting quietly reading the Bible, watching the wind blow, the water blow, and the sun warm me until I finally dozed off for a while only to be roused by pesky ants crawling on my leg. As I sat there intentionally soaking in the picture of the creation of God before me there was an intense feeling of being washed clean of all the worry of the modern world. The feeling of refreshement stemming from the intentional seperation from the hustle of cars, tv, and deadlines is beyond words. It was a true moment of spirituality while surrounded by the glory of God embodied in His creation.

Maybe this was the inspiration to the following song by St. Francis of Assisi written sometime between 1181 - 1226.

ALL CREATURES St. Francis of Assisi

Arrangement and Additional Chorus: David Crowder

VERSE 1: ALL PEOPLE OF OUR GOD AND KING

LIFT UP YOUR VOICE AND LET US SING

O PRAISE HIM, ALLELUIA

THE BURNING SUN WITH GOLDEN BEAMS

THE SILVER MOON THAT SOFTLY GLEAMS

O PRAISE HIM O PRAISE HIM

ALLELUIA

VERSE 2: THE RUSHING WIND THAT IS SO STRONG

THE CLOUDS THAT SAIL IN HEAV’N ALONG

O PRAISE HIM, ALLELUIA

THE RISING MOON IN PRAISE REJOICE

THE LIGHTS OF EVENING FIND A VOICE

O PRAISE HIM, O PRAISE HIM

ALLELUIA

VERSE 3: LET ALL THINGS THEIR CREATOR BLESS

AND WORSHIP HIM IN HUMBLENESS

O PRAISE HIM, ALLELUIA

PRAISE, PRAISE THE FATHER PRAISE THE SON

AND PRAISE THE SPIRIT THREE IN ONE

O PRAISE HIM, O PRAISE HIM

ALLELUIA

VERSE 4: PRAISE, PRAISE THE FATHER PRAISE THE SON

AND PRAISE THE SPIRIT THREE IN ONE

O PRAISE HIM, O PRAISE HIM

ALLELUIA

I know that feeling of refreshment well, I think I've been spoiled in that sense; growing up in Kerwood I came home to that seperation every evening.
There were many nights I'd just sit outside and talk to him staring up at the stars, and there are many days where I walk and stare across the vast planes am reminded of how large he is.

I'm not sure whether you intentionally used the word, "intentionally" three times in this post but it hightlighted for me the importance of living just that way: intentionally!
So often I find it easy to let life's demands pull me in every direction without stopping, as you did, to breathe in God's handiwork. Surrounding myself with His creation, I feel a tremendous sense of awe and reverence and it's impossible not to give Him praise. If this is indeed a "dim reflection", I cannot fathom how incredible God is. Really makes my material possessions seem futile.

and people always ask me why i choose to drive at least 30 min to work. they just need to do this once and maybe they would get it. that even though i'm driving in my car - with or without music playing - i'm surrounded by nothing but countryside. i love this particular route i take to work...and i always have to pause and drive slower as there's one spot that always takes my breath away. rolling hills, old wooden fences, perfectly shaped trees that would be great to picnic under or simply read, and a small river that tickles right through the middle. it's a small horse farm, but it gives the illusion of going on for acres and acres. my drive seems more awesome after it snows (but then again I love snow)...when the snow glistens off and everything is purified. they just don't get it...they live within 15 min. i get the blessing at least 30 min in the morning and 30 min back home.
